Spirits of Fire is a supergroup made up of a top-notch line-up, starting with Savatage and Trans-Siberian Orchestra guitarist Chris Caffery, Megadeth bassist Steve Di Giorgio (ex-Death, ex-Iced Earth) and former Fates Warning drummer Mark Zonder. Tim "Ripper" Owens, ex-Judas Priest and Iced Earth, was a founding member of the band before leaving in 2021, to be replaced by Italian Fabio Lione (Angra, Turilli / Lione Rhapsody, ex-Rhapsody of Fire).
This year the band released their second album, Embrace The Unknown, on Frontiers Records.
Focusing its sound on classic and absolute heavy metal, naturally the quality of the musicians involved stands out from start to finish, but this is not enough to leave a mark or thrill, although one or two tracks excite more, the album fulfills its mission well, amusing and entertaining. In particular, I'm a fan of the work that Frontiers has done with these reunions of established musicians. Although the results are mostly satisfactory, some projects can sometimes sound generic. I'm not saying that this is the case with Spirits Of Fire, which delivers a good heavy metal album, but it certainly won't be a work that I'll remember in December 2022.
Embrace The Unknown fulfills its mission, it's captivating, it's fun and it features a Fabio Lione in great form, it's worth it for the high-level selection that is Spirits Of Fire.
