Terno Rei in Lisbon: From introspective to psychedelic - A turbulent journey in the midst of silence

The band Terno Rei returned to Musicbox in Lisbon on August 20, two years after their last visit to the city, to perform their new tour "Nenhuma Estrela" (No Star), the same name as their latest album released in the first half of this year. With tickets sold out, the band opened an extra session for the same day and delivered a selection of songs that mixed the best of their latest albums and we at Metal Junkbox were there to check it out up close.
With a silent, introspective presence, the band took to the stage without any shouts from the audience or greetings, and with the guitars being switched on and the lights dimmed, they began "Próxima Parada". The silence gave way to a growing stage presence that embraced the Musicbox, and everything fell into place perfectly, there couldn't have been a better introduction for that moment. It wasn't until the fifth song that lead singer Ale Sater thanked everyone for coming and said how happy they were to be back.

The setlist began with new music, but then almost entirely the 2019 album "Violeta", which represents a moment of transformation and consolidation of the band's identity, which has made them better known outside the bubble. Hits such as "Solidão de Volta", "93", "Yoko" and "Dia lindo" were present. In addition, songs from the 2022 album "Gêmeos" such as "Difícil" and "Dias de Juventude" were also there. "Nenhuma Estrela" was represented interspersed among the past hits, standing out for its evolution in sound, including "Programação Normal", "Casa Vazia", "Relógio", "Peito" and more.

In the middle of the performance, Ale asked if there were people there for the first time and was surprised by the number of new people in the audience. He also took the opportunity to tell them that they will be back in February next year. The band, which has been playing for more than 15 years and is one of the main names in alternative national music today, moves through musical genres such as indie, dream pop, which combines melancholy with a denser sound and also carries a certain nostalgia for the eighties and psychedelia.

The intimate atmosphere, the introspection of the band, which contrasts with the strength of the music and the lyrics that highlight everyday but complex things in life, such as love, self-knowledge, loneliness and nostalgia, are a perfect combination for a plunge into melancholy and a reflection on feelings.
